Black Water Vampire (also known as The Black Water Vampire) is a 2014 found footage horror film written and directed by Evan Tramel. The film was released direct to DVD on January 24, 2014 through Image Entertainment. It stars Bill Oberst Jr. (The Devil Within; Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies; Dracula’s War) Danielle Lozeau (Werewolf Rising; Tales of the Wicked Unseen; Twinge)Andrea Monier (Are You Scared 2)Anthony Fanelli, Robin Steffen (Naked Zombie Girl).

Plot teaser:

Every ten years for the last forty years, a woman’s body is discovered in the woods outside of Black Water, drained of blood and bearing mysterious bite marks. Raymond Banks (Oberst Jr.) has been convicted of the crime, but Black Water resident Danielle (Danielle Lozeau) doesn’t believe that he’s the murderer. Hoping to prove his innocence and thus get Raymond off of death row, Danielle convinces her friends Andrea (Andrea Monier) and Rob (Robin Steffen) to venture out into the woods to search for evidence. They hire Anthony (Anthony Fanelli) to film their search, which quickly turns bizarre when they begin to hear stories about supernatural creatures. Despite Rob’s misgivings, the group begins a three day hike to see where one of the bodies was discovered, only to get lost in the process. As they try to make their way through the woods, the group finds that someone – or something – is following them…

Reviews:

“Towards the end of the movie things start to get a little weird (including some poor CGI), but still pretty original as far as found footage vampire movies go. Is there a real vampire? Is Banks the actual killer? Will the group make it out alive? These questions and more will be answered by the end of the film, which was actually pretty good. Overall it’s nothing outstanding or unlike things you’ve seen before, but definitely worth at least a rental.” Chris Egan, Horror-Movies.ca

” … the camera work here is certainly better than Blair Witch. Things are steadier and that helps tremendously. Secondly, there’s a whole subplot involving the would-be potential killer Raymond Banks (played by veteran Bill Oberst, Jr). Though the timing of it makes zero sense based on his age (according to the story), this guy adds a great sense of schizophrenic dread. His performance here is far and away the best and most interesting part of the whole film.” Andre Manseau, Arrow in the Head

vlcsnap-2014-01-12-17h22m26s216

“It’s a shame that Black Water Vampire didn’t step up to the plate a little more. It’s one of the few movies that tried to bring back the vampire as something vicious and lamprey-esque instead of the romanticized toothless version running amuck. It was also one of the first films to introduce the vampire to a feature length found-footage film. For a film with such honorable intentions, it unfortunately falls short.” David Calbert, Diabolique Magazine

black-water-vampire-hanging-around

“If you enjoy found footage movies and you can forgive the lack of originality in the first hour the pay-off is worthy, creepy and, on a couple of distinct occasions actually makes solid use of the found footage conceit. If you can’t then the characters’ trudge through very little on the hunt for a story may feel all too close for comfort.” Phil Lunt, The British Fantasy Society

“I have said before that I am not a huge fan of found footage films and this remains true. However I found myself caught up in the Black Water Vampire and I put this entirely down to the trail of breadcrumbs left by the scriptwriter (Jesse Baget) and the natural feel of the main actors. As a con, the use of camera at times seemed a little forced, but that is always going to be the case with this style of film (even the more magnificent examples such as the Rec series had their clunky moments in this regard). But if a film keeps you truly interested then that is certainly a big plus.” Taliesin Meets the Vampires

The fact of the matter here is that this film was really, really similar to the Blair Witch project that way. However, there are a few differences worth noting, mostly on the positive side. First of all, the camera work here is certainly better than Blair Witch. In Darkness We Fall – original title La cueva “The Cave” – is a 2014 Spanish found footage horror film co-produced, co-written (with Javier Gullón) and directed by Alfredo Montero. The movie had its world premiere on January 25, 2014 at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and follows five friends that find that their decision to enter a remote cave may be their last. It stars Marta Castellote, Xoel Fernández, Eva García-Vacas and is being distributed by Filmax International.

Plot teaser:

Five friends have decided to set out on a vacation to the beautiful island of Formentera, where they expect to spend their days full of fun and debauchery. On one of their outings they come across a cave set in a cliff and decided that it would be exciting to investigate it and see what they could find. However it isn’t long before the group realizes that they have lost their way, prompting them to try to find the exit instead of exploring further. Unfortunately they are unsuccessful in their attempt and are forced to stay the night and as a result they find their sanity weakening. As the lack of food, water, and sunlight paired with the isolation from society due to a lack of cell phone reception begins to take its toll on the group, they find themselves beginning to panic and hallucinate. Eventually their survival will rely on them making certain decisions that will change them forever…

Reviews:

” … an unsettling portrait of humanity. Its characters are fairly disposable, but that’s okay; they’re archetypal stand-ins for the baseline human beings of a Western world oftentimes overly impressed with itself. And if the pacing is uneven at times—the distance between twist and turn occasionally percolating a bit too long—well, again, that is almost befitting of a story about the fucked up nature of our species.” Shawn Macomber, Fangoria

“There is nothing massively original about In Darkness We Fall, but it is a well-sustained horror-thriller with Alfredo Montero always in control of the elements and crafting a nicely tense film with more than its share of well-structured jumps.” Mark Adams, Screen Daily

In Darkness We Fall is not a classic, but the film’s impressive, strong third act ensures it will have its fans. Warts and all, this is a quite enjoyable entry in the found-footage catalog, and I have a hunch we’ll hear more from Alfredo Montero in the future.” Ard Vijn, Twitch

For 19-year-old Jay, fall should be about school, boys and weekends out at the lake. Faced with this burden, Jay and her teenage friends must find a way to escape the horrors that seem to be only a few steps behind…

Reviews:

“Facing the anxieties of their encroaching mortality as their carefree teen years begin to fade away, the teens in “It Follows” realize they’ve been trapped by a frightening inevitability. There’s nothing as inherently terrifying as the steady approach of an evil presence that just keeps on coming. “It Follows” explores the intimate aspects of that fear by suggesting that it will never, ever dissipate.” Eric Kohn, Indiewire

“Mitchell has achieved something much more experienced directors have tried to do and failed. Not only will it get under your skin, It Follows, like all good horror movies, is really about something else. But let’s talk about that once you’ve seen it…” Phil de Semlyen, Empire

” … the most clever tweak on horror conventions since Cabin In The Woods. But unlike Cabin, which was sly and witty, this movie plays almost all of it straight. (I’m assuming that Carpenter-esque synthesizer score is meant to be a bit of a gag. If not, well, my chuckles were unintended)”. Jordan Hoffman, Bad Ass Digest

” …remarkably effective for most of its running time, ratcheting up the tension, then stinging the audience periodically with one of those jolts that sends everyone levitating a couple inches above their seats. But the excitement wears off after a point, once the kids realize they don’t really understand what they’re dealing with, resulting in a couple of badly staged set pieces…” Peter Debruge, Variety

Hemlock-grove-cast

Hemlock Grove is an American, Netflix Original, horror thriller television series. The show is executive produced by Eli Roth (Cabin Fever; Hostel; The Green Inferno), developed by Brian McGreevy and Lee Shipman. It is based on McGreevy’s novel Hemlock Grove (2012).

The show premiered April 19, 2013, with all thirteen episodes made immediately available for online viewing. On June 19, 2013, Netflix renewed Hemlock Grove for a second season.

Hemlock Grove, Pennsylvania. The town is a mixture of extreme wealth and poverty, as the closing of the town’s steel mill many years earlier caused many to lose their jobs. The town’s main sources of employment are now the Hemlock Acres Hospital and Godfrey Institute for Biomedical Technologies. Run by the powerful Godfrey family, the Institute is rumored to conduct sinister experiments on a daily basis.

The town’s rumor mill turns even more twisted when two teenage girls are brutally killed and their bodies left for unsuspecting people to find the next day. Peter Rumancek, a 17-year-old gypsy, is suspected of the crimes by some of the townsfolk; he is also rumored to be a werewolf. While secretly he is a werewolf, he is not the killer, and, along with the heir to the Godfrey estate, Roman, he sets out to solve the mystery…

Reviews:

“If the underlying formula is as old as Dark Shadows, there’s still a need for more narrative momentum than the 13-episode series initially delivers. So while one can understand why Netflix would augment its original slate with this mix of talent, “Hemlock Grove” remains a mere niche confection, one likely to play best among those genre fans who can’t see the forest for the trees.” Brian Lowry, Variety

OHa6iUzCKh

“Actually, embarrassing is a good way to describe everything about this show. It’s cringeworthy. You can tell that the creators thought they were being edgy, because they threw swear words into every other line and included lots of sex scenes, but it comes off as impossibly juvenile. There’s not a single character that acts like a real person would. They just do things, because the script says so. It’s hard to shake the impression that the whole thing was written by a child, just guessing at how the adult world works.” Sarah Dobbs, Den of Geek!

33

Hemlock Grove takes its time with story lines, ensuring that each one has plenty of room to ripen. It carries out every dastardly deed with gusto, but still offers enough moments of levity … And though the sordid world is captivating, I’m still grappling with aspects of the conclusion, which oozes with old-school misogyny that savagely punishes every girl and woman who dares to own her sexuality.” Jessica Shaw, Entertainment Weekly

Smothered is a 2014 horror film written and directed by actor John Schneider (best known as Bo Duke in The Dukes of Hazzard). The movie stars Kane Hodder (Jason Vorhees in four Friday the 13th films and Victor Crowley in the Hatchet films), Bill Moseley (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2House of 1000 Corpses; The Devil’s Rejects), R. A. Mihailoff (Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III), Malcolm Danare (Christine; https://www.google.co.uk/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=Pi-aU5vRMIPY8geOy4HYDQ&gws_rd=ssl#q=smothered+film+2014&start=10Popcorn; Godzilla), and Don Shanks (Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myersas several horror icons that find themselves the focus of a murderous hunt.

Plot teaser:

After a convention appearance gig turns out to be wildly unsuccessful and unpleasant, a group of cult horror icons find themselves reluctantly persuaded to haunt a trailer park. Lured by the promise of $1,000 a piece for what should be relatively easy work, the group arrives at the park but soon discovers that there is more to the job than they had initially been led to believe and that their own lives are at risk…

Reviews:

“This is a horror-comedy with some bite. Each of the icons gets a chance to play on their public persona as well as other horror icons and we see some pretty inventive mass-ups. One thing that is great is that though the convention scenes and plight of the individual characters is funny, there is a lot of truth in it as well. Hodder has a chance to play the romantic lead, of sorts, while Moseley is the optimist of the group. Shanks is the bully and Milhailoff is the big lug afraid of his own shadow. Malcom Danare is probably the most relatable of the bunch and his scenes with Shanks are some of the best.” Christopher Jimenez, Shock Till You Drop

“With a well-placed cast and entertaining script, Smothered was able to hide some of its shortcomings. There are a number of effects used, and they are hit and miss at best. A little more attention to the details on the make-up and gory F/X would have gone a long way toward polishing this film. Also, some of the acting is a little stiff in points, but it’s nothing that really bogs things down at all. In fact it’s a little reminiscent of the 80′s horror films thatSmothered is indeed at least partially a tribute to.” Dread Central

1040158_553570331355737_1978546569_o

“The film is well paced, with the mood changing repeatedly….from slapstick silly to downright scary….without missing a beat. Schneider has clearly spent some time behind the camera (from the final episode of “Dukes of Hazzard” to “Smallville” to made for television films) and that experience and confidence, especially in a genre’ that’s fairly foreign to him, allows him a free eye (and hand) in his story telling.” Media Mikes

Goal of the Dead is a 2014 French comedy horror film directed by Thierry Poiraud and Benjamin Rocher. It stars Alban Lenoir, Charlie Bruneau, Tiphaine Daviot, Ahmed Sylla, Bruno Salomone, Patrick Ligardes, Xavier Laurent, Sebastien Vandenberghe.

Official synopsis:

First half:

For the Olympique de Paris soccer team, this away match scheduled against Caplongue was merely supposed to be one last chore before the end of the professional season. Yet no one could ever have imagined that an unknown rabies-like infection was going to spread like wildfire, turning this small town’s inhabitants into ultra-violent and highly contagious creatures. For Samuel, the former golden boy who is nearing retirement, Idriss, the arrogant wunderkind, Coubert, the team’s depressed coach and Solène, the young ambitious journalist, this will turn into the most important confrontation of their lives.

Second half:

While the rabid supporters prowl about Caplongue, which is in a state of ruin, another nightmare begins for Sam. Barricaded in the police station with other survivors, he has to face the young Cléo, his grumpy father, and Solène, who hasn’t forgotten him this time. Meanwhile, Idriss and Marco, hidden in the stadium and looking for a way to escape, are also settling a few scores along the way…

” … this energetic and well-made genre bender is divided, like a game, into two halves … Originally released in France as separate movies, they’ve now been combined into a single feature that suffers under the weight of all the material, especially for such a throwaway concept. But Goal of the Dead is also a more intelligently realized venture than many a broad Gallic comedy or action flick, and as such deserves some recognition abroad…” Jordan Mintzer, The Hollywood Reporter

in September 2014, IDW Publishing/Yoe Books are re-publishing some of the most gruesome and gory moments from Eerie Publications’ horror comics in a collection gathered together by Mike Howlett.

Eerie Publications was a publisher of black-and-white horror-anthology comics magazines such as Horror Tales; Terror Tales; Terrors of Dracula; Witches’ Tales and Tales of Voodoo. Less well-known and more downscale than the field’s leader, Warren Publishing (CreepyEerieVampirella), the New York City-based company was one of several related publishing ventures run by comic-book artist and 1970s magazine entrepreneur Myron Fass. They even sneaked in reprinted tales from the pre-Comics Code Authority days.

The Mummy Resurrected Poster

‘Evil has awakened’

The Mummy Resurrected is a 2014 American horror film directed by Patrick McManus from a screenplay by Joanne Spring. It stars Stuart Rigby, Lauren Bronleewe, Elizabeth Friedman, Bailey Gaddis, Iyad Hajjaj, Fouad Hajji, Mark Naji, Pablo Time Nuñez, Jessie Paddock, Alena Savostikova, Sarah Schreiber.

Plot teaser:

A group of archaeologists uncover a long lost pyramid in the middle of the Egyptian desert. Believing the pyramid to be full of ancient treasures, the group decides to explore. Little do they know that their actions are about to awaken an ancient evil….

Review:

If you can accept a lead – Brit Stuart Rigby – who appears to read his lines rather than act them, a gaggle of young female archaeologists (hey, they all happen to be attractive) who “like” talk and “like” behave in the dimmest ways possible, lacklustre special effects and no attention to detail (in the closing credits Libyan is incorrectly spelt… three times!), then you might tolerate this. A mercifully short running time and a better than expected mummy are the film’s two plus points.

Adrian J Smith, Horrorpedia

“Well, if you happen to be that type of indiscriminate viewer who overlooks a script only doing the bare minimum to constitute a plot, who forgives poorly conceived visual FX because the animators had limited resources, and who gives the director credit simply for producing a completed film, then maybe you will find The Mummy Resurrected to be tolerable.  But if you demand at least some modicum of relative quality no matter the budget, scope, or production’s backstory, then you will have a hard time mustering any respect for a movie that refuses to respect you back.” Culture Crypt

“While this movie has an interesting back story and plot, it is lost mostly in shaky camera work and questionable acting at best. It is a real shame because the timing is right for the mummy story to return to the big screen, unfortunately just not with this movie. The cinematography by Emmett Callinan, who also took care of the Electrical Department [and co-produced - Ed.] is quite uneven and inconsistent and the musical score by a compilation of people does little to boost this movies flagging disregard for the viewers intelligence.” Cryptic Rock
